After that, Brother Bertrand left the lab, saying he was going to talk to the other professors about mixed magic.
So, I'm having Oliver teach me sacred characters from scratch.
Basically, magic circles use sacred characters.
The world's first magic was passed down from fairies to the demi-humans living in the Notos Union Kingdom. The characters used by those fairies are sacred characters. In other words, they are holy characters used by the gods.
Sacred characters are closer in image to hieroglyphs than to the alphabet.
Each character has a meaning, and the meaning of a word changes depending on the combination of characters.
Moreover, the number of characters is not as large as that of kanji.
It reminds me of the classic fantasy rune characters.
"Even though it's the first year, there are already students going abroad."
While I was seriously considering sacred characters, Oliver said that.
"Ah. I only heard about it for the first time today."
"Only a few students from the entire academy go abroad each year. And most of them are more like social studies trips for the upper class."
"Is that so?"
It's surprising, but when you consider the languages and other things in this world, it makes sense.
The language is a common world language. The academies are located in each major country, and it is up to each individual to decide which country's academy to attend.
The admission requirements are all unified, and to put it nicely, it's equal. To put it badly, there is no diversity.
"How are the study abroad destinations decided?"
"If you have a desired study abroad destination, you can go there. If not, it's said that you can go to a study abroad destination recommended by your supervising professor. Well, I don't think I'll ever have the chance."
Oliver gave a wry smile.
"Eh, but. If that's the case, why would Professor Müller send me to study abroad?"
"Who knows...? But, Professor Müller is a former A-rank adventurer, right? I think there must be some meaning. More importantly, let's focus on what Professor Müller and Professor Bertrand told us to do for now."
"Yes, sir."
◆◆◆◆◆
Several months have passed since I started studying sacred characters with Brother Bertrand and Oliver.
I hardly ever see Shiro and Arthur, whom I used to see almost every day.
"Hey, hey, did the commander of the battlefield re-enroll in the magic department, huh?"
"Oh, Ryaan! Long time no see!"
Oliver, who I've been spending almost all my time with for the past few months. As usual, when I tried to have lunch with Oliver in the cafeteria, it seemed that Shiro and Arthur had also come to have lunch.
"Ugh. It's been a while since I heard Arthur's spicy language. But please stop it now, because Oliver is here. I don't want to be thought of as the same kind of person."
"What did you say, huh?!"
Arthur grabs my collar at the long-awaited banter, but he has a smile on his face.
"So? Are you getting along with that young master over there now?"
"Ugh, that's vulgar."
"What are you guys..."
Oliver grimaces at Arthur's wording, and Arthur becomes displeased with Oliver's expression.
"First of all, let's introduce each other and have lunch?"
For the time being, we bring our lunches and take our seats.
The other students who don't know the circumstances look at our table with dubious expressions.
Shiro and Arthur sit next to each other, and I and Oliver sit across from them.
Shiro didn't really care about the knight or magic departments in the first place, so he's smiling, but Arthur is like a yakuza.
First, I introduce Oliver, who is sitting next to me, to Arthur and Shiro.
"This is Oliver Wood, who is teaching me magic right now. He also happens to be in the room next to mine in the dorm."
"I'm Oliver Wood. I'd like to say I'm a third-year student in the magic department, but since I'll be joining Professor Bertrand's mixed magic research team from next semester, I'll be assigned to the senior division."
"Eh, this is the first time I've heard of this."
"It was decided recently. I only heard about it from Professor Bertrand the other day."
Arthur frowned unhappily at Oliver, who said that with a slightly proud look on his face.
"Next, this good young man is Shiro Nakiri. He's in the same class as me, Professor Müller's."
"Nice to meet you. I'm Nakiri Shiro! You might think Nakiri is my last name, but in my country, Shiro is my first name. You can call me Shiro."
Oliver looked a little surprised at Shiro's friendly outstretched hand, and responded to it.
"Finally, this rude guy with a bad mouth and bad behavior is Arthur."
"Hey!"
Arthur's forehead wrinkled with a blue vein at my casual introduction.
"I'm Arthur Sishkin. So, are you strong?"
"Savage."
Is Arthur some kind of wild animal? Is strength everything?
"...At least, I'm better than you overall, who can only swing a sword."
"What did you say?!"
Shiro, who was next to him, restrained Arthur, who had risen from his seat with a clatter,
Eh, or rather, what are you inciting, Oliver? Are you a battle maniac? Is it a case of like-minded people hating each other??
"I hate guys like you the most! Guys who are weak but pretend to be cool!"
"What a coincidence. I get goosebumps when I see cowards who give up on using their brains but can't admit the strength of those who fight with their brains."
Why are you guys provoking each other like this?
Even though I wasn't planning on introducing them today, I was going to introduce these three before I went to study abroad.
That's because I wanted the three of them to cooperate and train in mixed party tactics and magic while I was away.
The effectiveness of magic is recognized in the knight department, but only in Professor Müller's class where I am. I think so.
The study abroad period is only half a year for the autumn semester, but if I don't do anything during that time, it will fade away.
"Everyone calm down! Arthur, you've been fighting with Rai, so you know how strong his magic is!"
"Oliver too! I admit that Arthur is a reckless battle idiot, but"
"Hey, Rai!"
"Even so, he's a great main attacker in our party. Please cut him some slack. Okay?"
Although there are problems with him, mainly in interpersonal relationships, Arthur's swordsmanship is remarkable.
If I ever go on an adventure as a commoner in the future, he is one of the members I would definitely like to travel with.
Of course, that includes Shiro and Oliver as well.
"Well, I'm also enjoying the banter when it comes to his bad mouth. Sorry."
I apologize with a chop of my hand.
I thought Arthur would say another word or two of complaint here, but he was surprisingly quiet, so I wondered and turned my gaze to him.
There, Arthur opened his mouth several times as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he didn't say anything and tightly pursed his lips into a へ shape, wearing an indescribable expression.
